1 Ride a Water Taxi
Hail a water taxi at the jetty in the city center to take you through the narrow waterways of Kampong Ayer, a township of multi-coloured houses built on stilts. Kampong Ayer is the largest water village in Southeast Asia.
2 Visit the Mosques
Islam is the state religion of Brunei and the mosques are the most prominent land marks that portray the strong Islamic influences in the country’s rich culture. Most prominent are the beautiful mosques around Brunei. Visit the magnificent Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien at the heart of the city’s capital, the ornate Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque or the charming Ash-Shaliheen Mosque.
3 Visit the Royal Palace during Hari Raya Aidilfitri
On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the lstana Nurul Iman opens its doors to the public. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei and members of the royal family, who greet every visitor during these three days, and also to take a peek inside the largest residential palace in the world.
4 Visit the Royal Regalia
The Royal Regalia Exhibition Hall was established to celebrate the 1992 Silver Jubilee of the Sultan’s coronation as the King of Brunei. A historical review of the present Sultan’s life is narrated through family pictures with detailed narrative texts in which the Sultan is highlighted through many of his portraits and a hologram. Exhibits include the artefacts that were used for royal ceremonies in the country, the gold and silver ceremonial weaponry, crowns embedded with jewels, and other paraphernalia that formed part of the coronation ceremonies, and ceremonial costumes as well as exhibits of “documents and treaties”.
5 Take a Mangrove Tour
Hire a water taxi at the jetty in the city center and take a cruise down the mangrove-lined waterways. Watch the many birds and animals that live in the mangrove trees, including the elusive proboscis monkey which is a true Bornean native!
6 Visit Temburong
Tour the pristine rainforest at the Ulu Temburong National Park, the conservation ground of Brunei’s rainforests. Here you can take jungle treks, longboat rides down the river lined by mangrove swamps, or climb up 800 steps to the top of the canopy walk and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the rainforest.
7 Take a Day Trip to Seria Oil Town
Drive to Seria town. It is about a one and a half hour drive from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan. Seria is the economic heartland of Brunei and is the home of the nation’s oil industry. You will see where it all began. You can watch the rows of “nodding donkeys” scattered around the town as they pump out black gold. Go to the Oil & Gas Discovery Centre. This is an interactive science museum showcasing exhibitions on Brunei’s oil industry. Take a photo of the Billionth Barrel Monument.
